General Meeting_Casey Greene
.

Speaker: Casey Greene, C.A., Director of Special Collections of the Rosenburg Library, Galveston, Texas

Casey Edward Greene has served with the Rosenberg Library since 1984 and Director of Special Collections since 1994. Casey currently heads a staff of five, including an Archivist and a Curator, who work in the Galveston and Texas History Center and the Museum.  Greene is active in the Society of American Archivists, chairing the Archives Management Roundtable from 2001–2007.  Greene is a charter member of the Academy of Certified Archivists.

The Rosenberg Library is one of the oldest libraries in Texas. The holdings of its special collections are extensive for southeast Texas.

“Trimming the Family Tree: Genealogical Sources in the Rosenberg Library”
Greene’s lecture will focus on the unique source material at the Rosenberg Library for assisting in genealogical research. The research room for Special Collections at the Rosenberg has nearly the same amount of materials as the entirety of Clayton Library. Although its focus is on Galveston and Galveston County, the collection has extensive materials on Houston and Harris County.

Seminar Speaker:  Barbara Vines Little, C.G.
Professional genealogist since 1982, specializing in Virginia record sources; past president, National Genealogical Society; former president and current governor, Virginia Genealogical Society, Virginia course coordinator and instructor, IGHR (Samford University); editor, quarterly Magazine of Virginia Genealogy; former editor, Virginia Genealogical Society Newsletter; and has published three volumes of Virginia court records.

Speaker: Judy Riffel, Louisiana Author and Editor

Judy Riffel discusses her new best-selling book, A Guide to Genealogical Research at the Louisiana State Archives.
Judy is the long time editor of Le Raconteur, journal and newsletter, of Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiane (the volunteer affinity support group for the Louisiana State Archives) as well as their treasurer in their 30th anniversary year. She has compiled, abstracted, and edited 20 books of finding aids of Louisiana records. The Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge is one of the best facilities in the state for genealogical research. Its holdings include commonly used genealogical sources such as censuses, vital records, and military records. But it also houses some lesser known collections of governmental records which can be useful in researching Louisiana ancestry. This lecture will cover the basic sources as well as some of the more underutilized ones.

Judy Riffel knows more about the Louisiana State Archives than any one else, including the archivists. Her new book is a smash success and best seller. Judy will lecture on the basics of how to research at the Louisiana State Archives, what collections are of the most importance, and how to find collections that will assist your research.

HGF members may purchase any book published by Le Comité at the member’s price up by Oct. 29, 2008 as well as the bargain books on the list. All books are available on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

Speaker: Linda Reynolds, MSLS, Director, East Texas Research Center, 
Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches.

Linda has been a librarian/archivist at the East Texas Research Center at Stephen F. Austin University since graduating library school (UTexas-Austin) in 2001. Linda was promoted to director in 2007, having served as assistant director since 2001. Linda is overseeing the digital conversion of the collection.

Seminar Speaker:  Craig Scott, C.G.

Craig Roberts Scott, M.A., is the CEO and President of Heritage Books, Inc., a genealogical publishing firm with over 3,600 titles in print located in Westminster, Maryland. A professional genealogical and historical researcher for more than twenty-three years, he specializes in the records of the National Archives, especially those that relate to the military. Past APG treasurer and Past APG director. Coordinates the Advanced Military Course at Samford, IGHR, and teaches in the Advance Research and Methodology course, the infamous course 4.
